Since most of the gallstones are caused by the patient’s diet, making certain changes works both as a prevention measure and as a treatment. It is good to know which foods to avoid so that the symptoms decrease. On the other hand, people must learn which foods are recommended for this health condition.
Fast foods, as well as other foods rich in fat must be removed from the diet. Spicy foods, pork, red meats, fowl, eggs and milk should also be avoided. A common factor can be observed in these foods: they all have animal origin. Besides these, onions, corn, nuts and beans may also promote the formation of gallstones.
One way to prevent and to treat this health condition is to follow a gallstones diet that is rich in fiber. Fruits and vegetables are known to contain generous amounts of water soluble fiber which is used for improving the digestion. A healthy gallstones diet should include grapefruits, lemons, garlic, apples, barley, artichokes, broccoli, alfalfa, watermelon, beets, carrots, horseradish, fennel, mustard greens, spinach greens, water chestnuts and olive oil radishes. It may seem like a diet made especially for vegetarians. If people need to add meat to their diet, then they should go for chicken, fish and turkey, as these do not contain that much cholesterol. The main idea is to include as many fruits and vegetables as possible in the diet. In addition, water consumption – around 10-12 glasses daily – is also helpful, as the elimination of the gallstones is promoted this way.
Another alternative treatment is referred to as gallbladder flush. It varies in duration between 5 days and 3 weeks and also varies in composition. Some recipes are based on apples and radishes that are consumed for 5 days, while others suggest taking 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of olive oil daily for the same period of time. The longer version is based on the aforementioned fruits and vegetables. However, some other ingredients such as cold-pressed flax seed oil and radish are added. More than that, people are recommended to drink 3 cups of cleavers tea or chamomile tea daily for the entire period.
It is very important to keep in mind that the gallstones diet is only recommended for the mild cases. When the symptoms start to get more serious people are suggested to look for medical advice, as a surgery may be imminent.
